Nichupté Bridge Opens to Traffic, a Key Infrastructure for Mobility in Cancún

The Nichupté Bridge has recently been opened to traffic, completing the commissioning of a strategic infrastructure aimed at improving urban mobility and connectivity in Cancún, in the state of Quintana Roo. With this new road link now in operation, the city’s road network incorporates an additional corridor designed to facilitate travel and support more efficient traffic management in one of Cancún’s most active areas.

As part of this project, SICE has participated as the contractor responsible for the supply, installation and commissioning of the bridge’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), following its award by Grupo ICA. The scope of work included the deployment of an integrated technological solution enabling the continuous monitoring, control and operation of the infrastructure once opened to traffic.

The implemented ITS allows real-time monitoring of traffic conditions and infrastructure status, supporting early incident detection, dynamic traffic management and user assistance services. All systems are fully integrated with Cancún’s C5 Control Center, enabling coordinated operation with existing mobility and public safety platforms and strengthening operational coordination and response capabilities along the corridor.

The project scope included the installation of state-of-the-art technological equipment, such as intelligent monitoring points with cameras and data collection systems, gantries for traffic control and supervision, variable message signs, lane-control signals for dynamic lane management, weather monitoring stations, automatic incident detection systems, SOS roadside assistance posts, a dedicated communications network and autonomous energy systems based on photovoltaic technology. The entire ITS is centrally managed through a dedicated platform that enables coordinated, real-time operation of the system.

With the opening of the Nichupté Bridge to traffic and the start-up of its ITS, the infrastructure is now fully operational, contributing to improved road safety, more efficient traffic management and smoother traffic flows in the surrounding area.
