The Oiartzun toll plaza on the AP-8 in Gipuzkoa now feature fully upgraded infrastructure following the completion of a major technology modernization project. The project has introduced greater automation across toll collection operations, optimized operational efficiency, and improved service reliability and availability.
The project, delivered by SICE for BIDEGI, involved the complete renewal of lane systems, communications, power supply and control systems, as well as the deployment of new automated toll lanes. The solution incorporates advanced vehicle detection and classification technologies, electronic toll collection equipment, multiple payment methods, all type of payment automatic machines without the need of toll operator in lane, and a remote management and supervision platform fully integrated with the client’s operational systems.
One of the project’s main challenges was carrying out the transformation progressively, with the existing facilities being demolished and renewed in phases while keeping the toll plaza operational throughout the entire process. This phased approach allowed the upgrade works to progress while the toll plaza remained fully operational, ensuring service continuity at every stage of the project.

From a technological perspective, the new infrastructure has been designed to maximize toll collection reliability and service availability. It integrates redundant detection, control and remote supervision systems, together with a fully upgraded electrical infrastructure and uninterruptible power supply systems. The project also included the installation of new support structures for dynamic signage, communications equipment and traffic data collection systems.
The modernization also enables faster passage for vehicles equipped with electronic toll collection systems and supports more centralized and efficient operations. Secure integration of the different payment methods completes a technology solution designed to optimize facility management and enhance the overall user experience.
With the final configuration now in operation, Oiartzun benefits from a more automated, robust and efficient tolling infrastructure, with fully integrated systems that enhance monitoring and control while supporting efficient day-to-day operations.
SICE has extensive experience in the design, development and implementation of technology solutions for tolling and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), participating in mobility and infrastructure projects across international markets. This expertise covers toll collection systems, electronic toll collection, vehicle detection and classification, communications and management platforms, integrating the different technologies required to deliver efficient and reliable operations.
