On December 2, the Provincial Council of Cáceres inaugurated the new ornamental lighting of the Cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción in Coria. The project modernizes the electrical installation and enhances one of the most emblematic monuments of Extremadura.
Among the main improvements implemented by SICE are the use of state-of-the-art LED luminaires, replacing the old lighting system with an efficient solution consisting of 65 LED projectors with different optics and telemanagement nodes, allowing control of switching on and off as well as light level adjustment to create different scenes. In addition, a new main control and protection panel has been installed.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Esther Gutiérrez Morán, First Vice President for Territory, Equality and Culture; Luis Fernando García Nicolás, Third Vice President for Development, Mobility and Provincial Agenda; and Almudena Domingo, Mayor of Coria, among other authorities.

The project contributes to environmental conservation and energy savings thanks to LED technology and complementary systems for the full operation of the new lighting. It also promotes tourism and cultural revitalization, highlighting unique architectural elements such as the bell tower with lantern, the Cloister, and the Puerta del Perdón, offering a unique visual experience for residents and visitors that encompasses both the Cathedral and its immediate surroundings.
The Cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción, built in the 15th century, is a Site of Cultural Interest and one of the city’s main heritage landmarks. The new lighting is part of a project framed within the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination of Valle del Alagón, funded by Next Generation EU European funds, which aims to promote energy efficiency and enhance the value of heritage.
