Castilla y León Drives Public Transport Digitalization with 377 Smart Stops for Urban and Interurban Buses

The Regional Government of Castilla y León has taken a decisive step in modernizing public transport by installing 377 smart bus stops across all provinces of the region. These infrastructures, designed for both urban and interurban bus lines, are part of an ambitious digitalization project aimed at enhancing user experience, accessibility, and the overall efficiency of the transport system.

The new stops are equipped with advanced technology, including real-time information displays, sensors, solar-powered systems, and connectivity with a central control center. Additionally, the project includes the installation of 24 smart shelters, 20 large-format (85”) screens in bus stations, 30 surveillance cameras connected to the control center in León, and a smart luggage locker. All of this will provide up-to-date information on schedules, waiting times, and potential service disruptions, significantly improving communication with passengers.

The contract, awarded to the joint venture led by SICE, covers not only the design and installation of the structures but also the development of the software that links the stops with the control center and the payment system of the regional government. Proper technological integration is key to ensuring efficient centralized service management.

The first smart stops have already been installed, and the rest are in various stages of implementation. The goal is to complete the entire project by the end of the year. This initiative not only represents a significant improvement in service quality but also reinforces the regional government’s commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and innovation in public mobility.
