The Westgate Tunnel project offers a vital alternative to Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge. It provides faster and safer journeys, and removes thousands of trucks from residential streets. SICE will supply a state-of-the-art motorway and tunnel control system based on SICE’s SIDERA software, which has been selected for the project as a worldwide standard in motorway and tunnel management. SICE is also responsible for the design, procurement and commissioning of ITS systems.

The West Gate Tunnel (WGT) is an urban transformation project that will provide a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, provide faster and safer travel, and take thousands of trucks off residential streets.

The main features of the project include:

1.Upgrading of the West Gate motorway with 4 additional lanes, widening the route from 8 to 12 lanes. This will include express lanes between the M80 and the West Gate Bridge to reduce junctions and merges that cause heavy congestion.

2.A new state-of-the-art tunnel will take motorists from the West Gate motorway to the Maribyrnong River and Melbourne Harbour. This new tunnel will take motorists and trucks underground and off residential streets, providing a more efficient freight route and reducing congestion along the West Gate Bridge.

3.A new bridge over the Maribyrnong River will link to an elevated road along Footscray Road and allow motorists to quickly access the northern CBD, reducing congestion along the motorway.

-SICE is currently implementing its operations management and control system (OMCS) and integrating the CityLink motorway into the system. SICE is responsible for the design, supply, system integration, testing and commissioning of the OMCS platform and all critical subsystems:

  • Signalling (VMS, TMS, LUMS/ISLUS, VSLS)
  • CCTV and Digital Video Management System (DVMS)
  • Automatic video incident detection system (AVIDS)
