tunnels were the great challenges within the process of renovating infrastructures in Spain. Since then, SICE has worked unstoppably on installing and controlling tunnel and ITS systems, for clientes such as Spanish Ministry of Public Works.
This area, among which are the Malmasín and Somosierra tunnels, consisted of installing lighting, ventilation, and variable signalling systems to guarantee the safety of road users.
In these early years, security regulations were frequently updated, prompting the company to stay at the forefront of technology and to propose new solutions capable of adapting to the needs of each client.
The year 2001
marked a before and after in tunnel management and control systems: a fire in the Mont Blanc road tunnel in March caused 36 deaths, and in October, two trucks collided in the Gotthard tunnel, causing a fire leaving 11 fatalities.
Regulations began to change, and many countries became very rigorous, not only in terms of the type of equipment required but also in terms of exploitation ("how to act in the event of an incident").
What, until then,
was a basic control system, evolved into a decision support system that could work automatically or semi-automatically and guide the operator when handling incidents coordinated with all the actors involved: maintenance teams, firefighters, police, and the emergency teams.
Software and paradigm
shifts SIDERA, an evolution of the previous SCA system. It was the software application that changed the paradigm and was applied to both tunnels and "open-air" ITS systems.".
SICE's software department, which in 1996 had just six employees, has today become one of the keys to the service, growing by more than 250 people.
During this time, the company has undertaken many increasingly complex tunnel projects. Among them, Madrid's urban tunnel project stands out. In 2002 entailed the centralisation of 4 tunnels through the City Council's corporate IP network, including video, audio and data and innovating the automatic detection of incidents through video. SICE continued equipping the rest of Madrid's urban tunnels and maintaining them from that date.
Safety, the intelligent management
AND optimisation of infrastructures has always been SICE's priority. Projects such as Madrid Calle 30, the Waterview tunnel (New Zealand), the Port of Miami Tunnel (USA), the Madeira Tunnels (Portugal) and the Westconex and West Gate tunnels (Australia), among others, are just a few examples to the more than 150 references of tunnels controlled by SIDERA. Together, they add up to 400 km of tunnels and close to 3,000 km of open-air ITS systems in 5 continents.
