Alcala de Henares hosts the cooperative pilot project “SAFECROSS system”, intelligent pedestrian crossing for people with reduced mobility developed by SICE

During May has been launched in Alcala de Henares the new SAFECROSS system from SICE, which incorporates as main innovation activation of green light demand from the citizen smartphone with two App (Android) allowing pedestrians and drivers interact through the deployment of cooperative services I2VRU and I2V (pedestrians as part of so-called vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclist, motorcyclist).

Thereby is intended to improve crossing road safety, allowing to extend “green time” and adapting to the need of pedestrians or informing vehicles of the presence of pedestrians.

The new Safecross includes the following elements:

  • Pedestrians crossing detection cameras and lights (SAFECROSS)
  • Bluetooth beacons (BLE) to activate demand with Bluetooth channel from mobile phones. Work has been done with BLE Bluetooth Low Energy.
  • Radio-beacons to connect these BLE beacons with the regulator.
  • PCBox through which the services of crossing are provided in real-time over 3G channels, based on SAE J2735 American standard (base CEN ISO TS 19091 under European definition).
  • A C-ITS station providing the communication channel WiFi Mobile (802.11p) to vehicles as Cooperative Systems standard.

This project has been funded by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism in the framework of the Strategic Action for Economy and Digital Society (AEESD in spanish) within the Plan of Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013-2016.
