SICE will implement a traffic light priority system for public transport in Santander

The works are part of the Infrastructure Construction Project for the METRO TUS implementation, a high-level bus service system in Santander.

TESINGER, a company belonging to the Perteo Group, has entrusted SICE with the installation of its Prioritization and Geolocation System "RBG1402-I2V", which will give priority to the public transport in Santander. SICE’s system is an integrated solution enabling intelligent wireless communication between priority vehicles and traffic light control elements with aiming at optimizing vehicle traffic.

The main objective of this traffic light prioritization system is to relieve the public transport from delays caused by the traffic congestion at the intersections controlled by traffic lights in order to reduce the travel times and improve the service’s commercial speed.

SICE’s system allows detecting the exact location of the municipal buses through a GPS geolocation system when they are near a traffic light that is about to turn red so the green phase of the traffic light lengths. Following this model along the main axis there will be 17 traffic lights to prioritize.

The system features two devices:

  • One of them on-board in charge of geotagging the vehicle and send a pass-through demand at the same time reporting the vehicle movement;
  • The other device is installed in the traffic light regulator and it manages the received information and makes the set priority strategies.

In addition, a ‘queue jump' system will be implemented as a complement at three traffic lights easing the incorporation of buses to the bus lane from a conventional lane.

The contract also includes the set-up of new crosswalks with traffic lights in the streets of Alcalde Vega Lamera and in the Valdecilla Avenue.

For both the prioritization system and the new traffic lights SICE’s MFU3000 controller will be used allowing total versatility. It offers different priority levels being able to be immediate or flexible depending on the vehicle that arrives at the intersection or the mobility policy to be applied.
