In 1992

the whole world had its eyes on Spain. The celebration of the Barcelona Olympic Games, the Universal Exposition of Seville and Madrid as European capital of the culture amazed everyone by the organizational capacity of their responsible, for the hours of entertainment and enjoyment they offered and for projecting an image of modernity.

Modernizing the country

But how were these achievements achieved? Was An enormous collective effort is required to modernize the country. One of the Key elements were the renewal of infrastructure. From the General Directorate of Traffic worked intensely to improve the road safety, fluidity and comfort of transfers, reducing accident rates on roads and pollution. For it, traffic regulation expanded its scale for the first time: it was not only It is necessary to control urban traffic, but also interurban traffic, access to the main cities.

The General Directorate of Traffic

Since 1985, SICE had already participated in different actions for the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). This collaboration began with the execution of the COSIVENSA project, management of reversible lanes of the N-II and Paseo de Extremadura in Madrid, in parallel with urban crossing control projects in the national roads, such as those for maintaining SOS posts in Andalusia. He had also worked in traffic maintenance urban area of Barcelona, both in the installation of regulation equipment as in city traffic management.

But it was in 1991 within the framework of this global modernization, when SICE (in a joint venture with two other companies in the sector) undertook the first great work for the DGT: MADRID-92, which managed all access to the city and its M-30 ring road.

Traffic signs on the M-30

SICE was in charge of the control project and traffic signs on the M-30. This project was a revolution in ITS systems with the first large communications ring by fiber optic, supporting video, audio and data. It connected two centers of control, providing support to all the national highways that arose in Madrid.

For 30 Years,

SICE installed access controls to the Universal Exhibition and centralized Urban traffic with the DGT, also installing the reversible rail of the centenary bridge to the then Ministry of Development

In the case of the city of Seville, and under the protection of the Expo, the Giralda urban ITS project meant the total transformation of the entrance roads to the city. SICE installed access controls to the Universal Exhibition and centralized Urban traffic with the DGT, also installing the reversible rail of the centenary bridge to the then Ministry of Development. This project served as a prelude to the subsequent modernization of the city in the early 2000s with the implementation of public transport prioritization systems.

Consolidating the relationship

After these projects, SICE and the DGT consolidated their relationship, providing innovative solutions for the access to cities like Valencia and Zaragoza.

For these cities, a Access Control System with 100% own technology, both in field equipment as in the ITS application software.

In 1995, SICE designed and installed the equipment and software for the exclusive BUS-HOV reversible lane on the N-VI, also from your own solution.

Innovating in technological proposals

In addition, the company collaborated in the groups standardization work led by the DGT, proposing the better solutions in ITS and innovating in technological proposals. This is how fog beacon systems were designed and installed, lanes with variable speed, panels with travel times, intelligent signaling at dangerous intersections and prediction systems weather to anticipate its impact on the condition of the roads, among others.

Later projects

such as road safety systems and access control to the Northwest, South, Asturias, Pyrenees or Balearic Islands consolidated the company's work at the service of improvement of road safety and mobility in Spain.

In recent years small projects have been carried out aimed at offering effective and cost-efficient solutions to specific problems, such as the detector beacons installed in the A-8 Mondoñedo-Vilalba highway, capable of keeping the public informed driver regarding the distance at which the vehicle is precedent in situations of intense fog; automatic systems range prevention, weather prediction systems; intelligent signaling systems at low visibility intersections or access control systems to the Natural Park of the Lakes of Covadonga.
