Mass transport in Mérida
Installation of a mass-transport system for the city of Mérida (Venezuela).
Mérida Regional Government–INFRAM (Venezuela)
The means of transport selected was the trolley-bus — an articulated bus with electrical (main) and
mechanical (auxiliary) traction — since the electrical power system used has a very low
environmental impact.
The network consists of 45 stations (16 dual platform and 29 single platform) distributed over the trolley-bus routes. SICE is responsible for the following subsystems:

The network consists of 45 stations (16 dual platform and 29 single platform) distributed over the trolley-bus routes. SICE is responsible for the following subsystems:
Centralisation of the city’s traffic lights
- Traffic-light system at 60 crossings on trolley-bus routes.
- Installation of a VideoWall to control and view the various subsystems in the network.
- Communications network: SDH STM-1 network (155 Mbps), integrating the various different subsystems (PA system, Ethernet networks, SCADA, telephone switchboards).
- Intruder control at stations
- TAG-based control of trolley-buses’ locations.
- Traffic-light control on each platform.
- System responsible for management, control and ticketing to access the stations.
- Monitors, supervises and acts on the various electricity substations responsible for powering the trolley-buses’ overhead contact line.
- Each station is equipped with a telephone for the ticket-office worker to communicate with the control centre.
- To control events at stations a fixed camera was installed at each.
- 3 automatic gates per platform, making a total of 183 gates.
- All stations have a background-music system controlled from the control centre (CC).
- Over this system live and pre-recorded messages can be issued at the stations.
- Turnstiles were installed at the stations, two at each station (90 in all), to control access to the station by passengers.
- Via 42” plasma screens (61) at stations (2 at dual stations and 1 at side stations), passengers are informed about the ETA of the next trolley-bus and average journey times between stations.
