Mass transport in Barquisimeto
Installation of a mass-transport system for the city of Barquisimeto in Venezuela.
Transbarca (Venezuela)
Installation of a mass-transport system.

The means of transport selected was the trolley-bus — an articulated bus with electrical (main) and mechanical (auxiliary) traction — since the electrical power system used has a very low environmental impact.

The network consists of 48 stations (46 split and 2 head terminuses) distributed over the trolley-bus routes. SICE is responsible for the following subsystems:

Centralisation of the city’s traffic lights:
  • Traffic-light system at 117 crossings on trolley-bus routes.
Control centre:
  • Installation of a VideoWall to control and view the various subsystems in the network. The VideoWall is made up of six 50” DLP back projectors in a 3 x 2 layout.
Communications network:
  • Gibabit Ethernet network
Operations-support system — unifying all the information from the subsystems.
  • Intruder control at stations
  • TAG-based control of trolley-bus locations
  • Traffic-light control on each platform.
Ticketing system:
  • 2 PSO terminals (TPV) at each twin station, responsible for management, control and ticketing for access to the stations .
  • 76 Automatic sales units
SCADA:
  • Monitors, supervises and acts on the various electricity substations responsible for powering the trolley-buses' overhead contact line.
Telephone switchboards:
  • At each POS terminal (TPV) and rectification post (PR) an IP telephone was installed for communications with the control centre.
Closed-circuit TV — to control events at stations, the following items will be installed:
  • 2 fixed cameras and one dome at each station
  • 3 fixed cameras and 7 domes at each terminus
  • 9 domes at the control centre
Automatic gates —the opening of platform gates and trolley-bus doors is synchronised, by each trolley-bus communicating with the corresponding platform. In order for the trolley-buses doors to open, it must be correctly positioned.
  • 3 automatic gates per platform, making a total of 348 gates.
  • Gate-opening management units on each trolley-bus (80)
  • Platform gate-opening management units (116)
PA system:
  • All stations have background music controlled from the control centre (CC).
  • Over this system here live and pre-recorded messages can be issued at stations.
  • The ticket-office worker has a desktop microphone.
Access control — turnstiles installed at stations to control access by passengers.
  • 3 turnstiles per twin station (138)
  • 16 and 12 at terminuses
  • Access gates for disabled people (100)
Control of trolley-bus routes and journey times:
  • Via 42” plasma screens (205) at stations (2 at twin stations, 101 and 12 at head stations), passengers are informed about the ETA of the next trolley-bus and average journey times between stations.
