La Pólvora tunnel: now a reality
“Super Tunnel” for the Southern Approach to the Port of Valparaiso opens for trial period, with a tunnel-management system implemented by SICE Agencia Chile S.A.
September 5, 2007 //
Valparaiso. Chile
The Chilean Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Bitrán, applauded the first trucks to drive through
La Pólvora tunnel, the key structure of the Southern Approach to Valparaiso that will allow
vehicles to leave the port and head straight for the south without having to pass through the city
centre.
The works opened for a trial period on 27 August 2007.
The tunnel, which runs through a large part of the Playa Ancha hillside, has been catalogued as one of the most modern in Latin America.
The tunnel is almost 2,200 metres long, with a single two-way carriageway. It was built by Ferrovial Agromán Chile S.A.
The tunnel-management system has been supplied, installed and commissioned by SICE.
SICE was awarded the corresponding contract in May 2006, beginning with the engineering and equipment-supply phase. The actual installation work began in January 2007.
