SICE installs luminous bollards in Gijón
The first luminous bollards are now operational in Avenida del Doctor Fleming
May 30, 2007 // Gijón. Spain
Anyone who has driven down Avenida del Doctor Fleming recently will already have experienced the new measures implemented by the Gijón City Council to reduce traffic accidents in the city.

The first luminous bollards to come into operation are at the two pedestrian crossings opposite the Sports Complex. After a few days’ preliminary work preparing the necessary technical installation, the council’s Traffic and Public Safety Department switched the bollards on for a trial period.

The traffic authorities opted for pedestrian crossings outside the city centre to test such factors as their effect on drivers and the light level necessary. The trial will also help drivers to get used to these devices, which will be sited at uncontrolled crossings and ones with traffic lights. When the trial period ends, the Traffic Department will start installing the bollards in Calle de los Moros, Calle Begoña, and at the crossing with Calle Pedro Duro y Llanes with Avenida de Portugal. The plan includes the installation of a total of 200 luminous bollards at 40 pedestrian crossings throughout the city.
