Since 1921
The city of Madrid has one of the most advanced air-quality control networks in Europe, not only in terms of the number of measuring stations but also because of the reliability of the data it provides. The network has been supported by the Ministry of the Environment, the Madrid Regional Government and the Carlos III Health Institute.
The network assesses the city’s air quality to protect people’s health. The local authority
can inform the population of any pollution levels that could have a negative effect on their health
or to declare an atmospheric alert level that may involve specific actions and prohibitions.
Under the applicable legislation, Madrid would need only seven measuring stations, but the
city’s Air Quality Surveillance Network has four times as many: 27.
The purpose of the resolution by the local authority is to maintain the network by extending
the contract held by the company Sociedad Ibérica de Construcciones Eléctricas, S.A. (SICE).
