Environment Ministry awards contract for the operation and maintenance of the Segura SAIH
To provide real-time information on rivers and reservoirs in the catchment area
October 17, 2007 // Murcia. Spain
Author: Press Office, Ministry of the Environment
The Spanish Environment Ministry has awarded the contract for the operation and maintenance of the Segura Water Authority’s automatic hydrological information system (SAIH) to the joint venture composed of Dragados S.A., Sociedad Ibérica de Construcciones Eléctricas S.A. (SICE) and Indra Sistema S.A.

The contract budget is €4,371,251.

These actions are within the ambit of the AGUA programme, which includes projects to improve water management and supply and restore the environment, in accordance with current and future needs in relation to the development of territories in a way that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

The aim of implementing the Segura catchment area’s SAIH is to capture, transmit, present and process hydrological information that describes the status of the rivers in the area in real time.

The SAIH automatically provides data on a number of different variables (meteorological, hydrological, hydraulic infrastructure status, etc.) that affect the management, control and operation of the catchment area’s water resources. This will also allow the operation of reservoirs, channels and conduits to be controlled and optimised, not only to satisfy the demand but also to deal with flash-flood situations. This data can also be used to make forecasts of the availability of surface and underground water resources and the evolution of river levels and flow rates.

It is laid out as a remote-control and information-system network, made up of stations housing equipment that supplies data on rivers, reservoirs and irrigation stations.
