What is the World Water Forum?
The World Water Forum is an initiative of the World Water Council (WWC) that is held every three years with a view to influencing global policy-making.
The first three Forums were held in Morocco (Marrakesh, 1997), the Netherlands (The Hague, 2000) and Japan (Kyoto, Shiga and Osaka, 2003).
What are the goals of the World Water Forum?
The World Water Forum has three main objectives:
The 4th World Water Forum, which will be held in Mexico City on 16– 22 March 2006, will consist of five separate parts:
Theme Forum
The purpose of the Theme Forum is to formulate global policies, orienting discussions from the beginning towards aspects of the core theme of the 4th Forum: “local actions for a global challenge”
It has been structured into the following five topic areas, which combine and explore some of the most important issues and challenges being faced by the world of water.
The Ministerial Conference on 21–22 March, attended by over 100 environment ministers, aims to encourage dialogue between ministers and other participants in the Forum. The main result will be a Ministerial Declaration.
The format of the meeting will be two plenary sessions and tour or five simultaneous round tables, divided by topic, which will take into account the results of the 13th sessions period of the Sustainable Development Committee, which will address the topic of water and sanitation, as well as the Forum’s topic round tables.
World Water Expo
The World Water Expo will run in parallel to the 4th World Water Forum, between 16 and 21 March 2006, at the Centro Banamex in Mexico City.
It is quite probable that this exhibition will become one of the most important exhibitions in the world, not only because of the number of exhibitors from many different countries, but also because of the high level of the visitors expected (senior figures from water-sector organisations at the Forum and Ministerial Conference, business executives, industrial buyers and researchers).
The participation of 14 official pavilions is expected (Spain, Japan, France, Portugal, Mexico, Germany, Israel, Korea, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, United Status and Canada) with an estimated 25,000 professional visitors. The sector topics around which the exhibition will be based include wastewater treatment, water purification and distribution systems, irrigation-control systems, filtration, chemical engineering, hydraulic engineering, electricity generation and water-pumping.
